Unpleasant noises

So we drove out to Aunt Kathy's for Easter today...and Jeff's car, which has been making some minor noises, now makes major grinding and clunking sounds when Jeff drives it, particularly when he brakes. The most frustrating part about this, is that about a month ago, it did this and we brought it in. The mechanic shaved off the pieces that were grinding together so that they didn't touch anymore. Well, obviously the pieces kept moving and now touch again. Way to pay for something that didn't work at all. So now we get to be down a car again, paying for damage again, which most likely is going to cost more than last time to ACTUALLY fix the problem. His check engine light is also on, and his headlights flash repeatedly when the car is put into park...neither are good signs alone, but put all three together and we have the trifecta of car problems. If anyone has a loaner car for us this week, we both have too many places to drive to be down to one car for more than a few hours.
